Tattoo Removal

Firstly let’s look at how tattoos work. The tattoo pigment is placed in the dermis. This is the deep layers of skin, and the ink particles are quite large, and cannot be absorbed by the body here. This makes the ink permanent.

Tattoo laser removal works by directing the laser light onto the tattoo. The laser is set to certain wavelengths depending on the ink colour. Black ink is the easiest to remove or fade.

Why? Because these colours absorb all wavelength of light. If you think about the colour spectrum, black absorbs the laser light, whereas white retracts the laser light. Reds, blues, and greens can take a little longer.

The ink absorbs the laser light, and the ink particles are shattered into tiny little particles.

3 Different Wavelengths

We are able to treat a range of colours with the machine’s 3 different wavelengths: 1064 nm, 532 nm and 694 nm.

1064 nm – Black and Darker Tattoos

The most common tattoo colours we see are black and dark tattoos.  For these, we use a wavelength of 1064 nm, which is ideal and very effective for removing these colours.

532 nm – Reds and Warmer Tones

The next common colours we see are warmer tones like reds, oranges, yellows and browns.  For these colours we use the 532 nm.

694 nm – Ruby Laser – Blue and Green Tattoos

The wavelength used for blue and green inks is called the Ruby laser.  The Ruby laser has a wavelength of 694 nm.  However, it is important to remember that coloured tattoos can take a little longer to remove than black or darker inked tattoos.

The Elimination Process

The shattered ink is then eliminated through the lymphatic system. This is the body’s natural cleansing system. Every tattoo is different, and so is every individual. The healthier you are, the quicker the process. There are things you can do to help boost your immune system and help with faster results.

Number of Treatments

Generally, it takes 6-10 treatments to remove or fade a tattoo. However, this can vary on a number of factors:

  • Tattoo colouring
  • Skin tone
  • Layering of tattoos
  • Tattoo location
  • Health
  • Amount of ink
  • Age of tattoo
  • Professional or amateur

Removal or fading of a tattoo is like peeling back an onion skin, we can only treat one layer at a time. We will do a skin assessment so we can estimate how many sessions you might need.

It’s advisable to wait at least 6 weeks between each treatment. The ink elimination process takes time. We recommend this amount of time so we can achieve the best results.
